B/c if both sides of a swingarm stuck inside the rim like that, it'd be impossible to take the wheel off the bike.

I like that they are returning to 996 design. But the current trend in motogp and sbk is shorty side exhausts - but I like this anyway. And note the huge air vent on the side fairing. BUt I am not sure how from a pic the article decided that it will be a 1098 and not a 1198...

Shorty exhausts seem to the the latest fashion, but it would be hard to fit all of that under a Ducati engine. There just isn't enough room there for a legal system.

Looks like an SSS but notice where the rear brake rotor is. It doesn't appear to be on the same side as the rear sprocket.

Look at the second last picutre, the silver thing on the inside of the wheel is the rotor and clearly on the inside.

As for the bike, I'm glad they're going back to SSS, it was something special that Ducati had. As for it costing a second or two around a track - no way, maybe a thousandth of a second or two but that's it. We're not talking about a few pounds here. The fact of the matter is that the race bikes really don't have the same parts anyway, sure they look the same but that's about it. For a street bike, the bling factor is important and well worth the tiny weight penalty.

If anyone can find the specs, I'd love to see the actual difference in weight between the SSS and DSS.

I'd say this is the bike. I don't know if you guys remember the shots of the DD16RR way back when, but it had just some random exhaust stuck on and the bodywork looked like nuts, etc.... Then the final product came out looking much different.
That is a 9*6 swingarm with a plate welded to it to cover the chain. Look at it then look at a picture of a 9*6 swingarm and then reconsider your statement. I know a guy who did that same type of thing to a Honda Hawk track bike after losing a chain and having it fly up and rip a chunk out of his leg on the track.
Not hard to do at all.

Also, consider this. When the first spy shots of the Desmosedici street bike were published, the bike was about 95% of the way it would look competed. The same goes for the 999/749 body bikes. Ducati has never really been known to hide their new bikes. Their prototypes are usually pretty close to the final run to reduce costs as they are not the most financially secure company in the world.

Now I am not saying that this CAN'T be the new bike. I am just saying that don't get too disappointed when it turns out to be someone's track mule with a frankenstein combination of parts.

That being said, the 1098 makes less sense mathematically than an 1188 displacement motor. Alot more tooling changes need to be made to make 1098 than 1188. (This coming from a friend who is a math professor that did a comparison with exsisting bores and strokes to find out what each would take to get versus the current tooling for exsisting engine specs. And his 35 years of math and engineering goes a little beyond what I know.)
