Just get good riding pants (Kevlar or leather) I also like to wear socks and underwear.

Besides good quality and properly fitting helmet and gloves, you want jacket and pants with CE-approved armor. If you are on a budget, than jacket for sure. Get good over ankle boots too.

The only time chaps are okay is when you don't wear pants beneath them. And not for riding. But I am from SF so YMMV :-)

I wear 1-2 and 4-6 plus a balaclava and earplugs. It's hot in Thailand and the balaclava (for hot weather, not the one to keep you warm in cold weather) soaks up/wicks away moisture inside the helmet.

On the serious side -
I have armored LEATHERS - From Neck to Toes...
I like my FLESH a lot!!! I would rather leave dead cow on the pavement than ME!!

I might add a Waterproof "oversuit" that I carry (see where I live for why that might be!) and I just picked up some hybrid (Gerbing) heated gloves that just ROCK... Having hands go NUMB can be dangerous..
