Helmet customizing

A buddy just gave me a helmet and I was curious if anyone has ever spray painted there helmet and if they did any tips? The helmet is an eye sore to me but better then my previous one. I'm thinking of making it either matte black or matte green and incorporating a Italian flag.

That's correct. I can't remember if it was my Bell or one of my other helmets, but one of them specifically stated that it was absolutely not to be painted. It would compromise the structure of the helmet.

Vinyl graphics are probably the best way to go.

why bring it to a customizing shop? As what they've said, improper paint can ruin your helmet.

I have painted my helmets in the past. It can be done. Look at all the big companies that do it for top level racers. Troy lee designs paints helmets, why can't you?
You just have to take precautions.

The foam in the helmet can de damaged by the solvents in the paint. Well now you can get high quality water base paint that will not damage the helmet. They are available in small quantities in lots of colors from air brush supply companies.

This is automotive style paint, similar to what is used to paint European cars like Mercedes, so it will hold up on your helmet.
