Thoughts on day-glo gear?

The cones (photopic) are most sensitive to light wavelength at 555nm. This is roughly the fluorescent yellow/green. In the dark, the rods (scotopic) are sensitive to wavelengths at 507nm. This is roughly the cyan blue. So for the dark, you probably actually want something that's blue if it's not reflective.

Yeah, I tell people it all looks the same out the visor. A friend of mine was a tire engineer for a major tire company. He did some performance testing for with various cars. He said the M version of BMW's Z3 made up for the shitty trailing link suspension they used. I remember saying, the Z3 is ugly. He replied, when you're doing high performance testing, you don't care what the car looks like. You only care about how the car is performing. Going fast is going fast. Similarly on the bike, being safe is being safe. It all looks the same out the visor.

When I started wearing an orange vest I noticed cars stayed several car lengths behind me. At stoplights oncoming traffic were aware of me if I was making a turn. I wouldn't ride without it now. And I felt nerdy at first until I realized how much my safety margin had gone up.
