Default (Wedding) Rings - Damage to hand

Has anyone ever though about / heard about / or have experience with falls involving damage caused by the wearing of rings?

I work in an industrial industry and have seen photos of some pretty messed up fingers (shaved if you like) caused by rings catching onto something.

Do gloves normally prevent this? I was thinking of taking mine off when riding in the future!

Comments?

Have not personally heard of any moto injuries that are directly attributed to a ring. A good set of gloves should really keep anything from getting caught up like that.

I'm sure some rings have had to be cut off after the fact due to swelling from other injuries to the hand...

My buddy had two white gold wedding bands that got messed up, hence the two, (not riding related) and opted to get a titanium one so it wouldn't get all scratched. That is, he was going to get one until a doctor friend of his said that most ER's aren't equipped to cut off titanium rings so if anything ever happened it would be bye bye finger.

I had a friend who had a pickup change lanes into him. The impact with the truck broke a metacarpal but also his wedding ring caused, the medical term is, "partial de-gloving" of his ring finger. Basicially the impact with the truck, even through his gloves, tried to pull his ring off his hand and tore the skin at the base of his finger. The EMT said it was not an uncommon hand injury for people wearing rings.

Just hearing the term "partial de-gloving" when referring to skin made me take off any rings before I ride.

I wear a silver ring and a titanium one. I'm gonna put them in my pocket now when riding. :-\

I've got a leather necklace thingy I put my wedding ring on when I'm climbing or riding on the track or in the twisties. I bought specifically for that purpose. I don't want them to have to cut it off in case I jam my finger (which I did on my ring finger on my right hand in a track crash).

Of course if you lose your ring when you're out riding, the spousal reaction might make you wish you'd just had it cut off. (the ring that is) [laugh] [laugh]

Seriously though, I've never seen anyone have a finger injury from the ring itself. And yeah, a hand injury will make your digits swell up and they'll have to take the ring cutter to your wedding band.
