What the title says gents, apparently, the paint is like Haribo jelly and gets scratched just by...looking at it.
Now, before anyone gets cute and mentions Starbucks, the topic at hand is not whether a road vehicle gets paint scratches/scuffs or not 'cause it does (and it always will), but, it boggles the mind just how shitty the paint quality is for a 18.400€ bike.
Apparently, even a (clean) micro-fiber cloth will leave streaks/fine scratches on the paint no matter how careful you are.
Never had this on my 2 125's scooters decades ago, not on a CBF600 and not even on my 796 which i had for 5 friggin' years.
In fact, talking about the 796, that bike had seen some real road-action, used every possible cleaning chemical on it and yet, 5 years later the paint held up exceptionally well, sure, you had your usual (very) minor scuffs from usage but other that that...nothing - a stark contrast from the 1200's paint quality, and this is a bike i've had for only 6 months...
It's gotten to the (silly) point of actually being afraid to touch (and clean) the damned thing.
Just came back from a detailer a couple of days back to freshen-up the tank & cowl and...2 days later there's already a nice swirl on the left of the tank, what the heck.
Apparently, it's just primer--> paint --> 2nd coat of paint mixed with some kind of clear coat (to give it that shine) instead of the usual
primer --> paint-->paint--> paint --> good ol' clearcoat (you know, to actually being able to protect that colour).
Paint on this thing is thinner than an old man's receding hairline ffs...
Can't imagine how it'll be/look in, say, 3-4 years from now.
If it wasn't for those damned embossed tank logos (something which the 821/1200R/2017 M.Y doesn't have) i'd just spray a couple of clear coat passes, or, just wrap the damned thing but, again, them embossed tank logos...
Which brings me to : how was the general paint quality on other/older Ducs gents ? How was it on - say - the older monster gen (620/695/S2/S4R) ? How about the sbk's ? Has Duc been skimming on the paint for long now or is this a new thing ?
I only have the M796 (which the paint quality was excellent) to compare to so...
Cheers boys
