Default Welcome to the Police State ... have a nice day ... or we will take that too!

Its not just speeding ... no more wheelies either. wtf. Do you feel safer? No. Its just another way to collect fines and raise money without doing real enforcement against real problems (gun fights, violence, thefts, etc). There is no money stopping real crimes but its very lucrative to make new traffic laws and enforce these law abiding against ordinary people working in a rigged traffic system. Cash hungry governments masquerading "safety" traffic laws while the real motive is to raise cash. They should just install ATMs in the police cars

New Law Gives OPP The Power To Seize Speeding *ANYTHING*
Sunday September 30, 2007
CityNews.ca Staff

The Ontario Provincial Police are taking the fight against aggressive drivers to the next level, after being granted the authority to temporarily seize the vehicles of those driving in excess of 50 kilometres above the limit.

The new law came into effect at 12am Sunday, and one minute later the first motorist was nabbed in a black Hyundai going 160 km an hour. That driver, like all others who violate the regulations, lost their car on the spot and for at least a week. As of Sunday 24 vehicles had already been impounded.

"One young man burst into tears as his mother's car was towed away," said OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley. "Two of the vehicles were rental cars and of course the drivers will be responsible for an extra week's rental."

And the rules don't just apply to highway driving, but also to neighbourhood streets. Along with the loss of a car, speeders can also expect a hefty fine of at least $2,000. Arguing with police can see another $5,000 tacked on top of that.

But contrary to what some believe, it's not just men under 25 being targeted.

"I had a 75 or so year-old man just last year, driving 60 over the limit," recalled OPP Cst. Graham Williamson.

Popping "wheelies," doing "donuts" or weaving in and out of traffic can also ensure the loss of one's vehicle.

"We want to make aggressive driving as socially unacceptable as impaired driving," Sgt. Woolley added.

To recap, vehicles can be seized and fines handed out when drivers:

. Drive 50 km/h or more over the speed limit;
. Race and/or stunt drive; and
. Drive with someone in the trunk.

Ha Ha. Its actually quite dangerous to stop real criminals with guns and unfortunately it does not generate any money. So basically, the risk/reward opportunity is not very attractive. Further, most real crime is pretty boring and the police actually know who is involved. I've heard stories of the chain reactions in crime and the police even know who will get it next.

Cynically speaking Ontario has a perfect racket going with traffic enforcement. Traffic enforcement is a MAJOR source of revenue and helps pay for even more traffic enforcement.

Think of it. We all know many roads have speed limits that are way too low. Even the OPP think that some roads show have higher limits and thats the police! Obviously, I am not talking about schools, residential areas, etc. I am talking about the restricted access highways or the great empty spaces in low density areas with no pedestrian traffic, no change in traffic patterns, etc. Also, just because there is a speed limit doesn't mean you have to drive at that speed. If you don't want to, or the conditions don;t allow, then by all means travel at a speed that is safe.

So the Traffic Enforcement "business model" is simple. Keep speed limits ridiculously low. Introduce big penalites for violations. Hire some enforcers to enforce the laws. Sit back and watch the money roll in. The real beauty, is that its all done in the name of "safety" and who doesn't want safety?

Its a fantastic racket.

I think the next step is that they should "spin-off" traffic enforcement. Do an IPO. We can all invest and then the shareholders can push to get speed limits lower, fines higher, and make even more money ... errr... I mean have safer roads

We need to invest in impound lots. They are going to be over full very soon.

I seen an illuminated billboard on the 403 near the QEW Burlington Yesterday " 50Km over limit $10,000, fine, vehicle confiscated, charged etc etc" I have never expressed an interest in breaking the law but if I thought that was coming down it would be hard to want to pull over and just accept it. I think this will encourage a more "dash mentality" which is dangerous enough on a bike (for yourself and others) but picture a fast car (pick one) or a fast truck. Sounds like a real accident in the making one that was created by this blanket threat. Everyone pays (and pays)when you break the law and get caught, fines, demerit points, insurance and potentially livelyhood ( licence etc) Your right Police State it is. Damm I need a "track bike"
