Default Fuel Filter Change Need Help!

Have any of you fellow Monster owners had the privelage of changing their own fuel filter? If so any help would be greatly appreciated. I got the filler assembly off without any problems but I had no idea how to get the filter out of the tank let alone install the new one. I have read in other posts that you simply pull up on the fuel pump and it comes loose from the clamps that hold it. Is there any special way of doing this? Or do you just pull up? I dont want to break anything so if anyone is experienced and thinks they could walk me through the process please help.

Thanks
Cory

Cory,
LT Snyder has a book "Ducati Desmodue/Desmotre Maintenance and Modification Guide. It can be a good reference for doing maintenance on your monster. You may want to get a copy of this book for yourself since you appear to be handy with tools and are inclined to work on your bike. I believe he publishes his own book. If you are in a hurry and are already in the middle of the work, I caan make a copy of the section you need from my own copy of the book and you can PM me for a time we can meet for you to pick it up.

how far have you gotten?

just like you said, you just pull up, well, more like pull diagonally up, but yeah, it's a little cludgy with all the lines giving you some resistance...

Well I got as far as getting the filler assembly out and then realized it was tougher than I expected so I put it back together. I called AMS and got some guidence so I am gonna give it another try tonight after work. I will let you guys know how it goes. I just didnt know the whole fuel pump assembly came loose so you can access the hose clamps on the filter. Thanks for all the advice I will keep you all posted.

SUCCESS! Ok so I got the fuel filter changed and in the progress fixed what had to have been the gremlin that has been a pain in my ass for over a month. As soon as I removed the old fuel filter I blew through it to see if there was any restriction, it was like tryin to blow through a coffee stirrer. I am amazed my bike was even running, as I was putting the new filter and the fuel pump back in the tank I noticed the gas that was left in the tank. I could actually see the fuel seperated by water so needless to say I started cleaning. After about an hour I finally got all the nasty gas/water/rust out of the tank by adding a little gas then stirring it up and siphoning it out until I was getting clear gas through the hose. I then went and got some fresh gas along with some fuel injector cleaner. WOW it was like a totally different bike! I'm just glad I got this fixed without spending a bunch of $$ all it cost me was $29.00 for a fuel filter and alot of time and patience. I also learned alot about the internal workings of my bikes tank. If anyone ever has any questions, or needs some help changing there own filter I would love to help it's not near as hard as it looks. [thumbsup]

Thanks to all who helped out, I hope to see you all again soon [thumbsup]

It's a stretch, but not a big one, you might consider using a fuel additive like Sta-Bil or many others like it. The fuel we use from the pumps these days is awful. Especially regarding bikes with carbs vs. bikes with fuel injection. I put Sta-Bil in all my bikes, whether injected or carbed, to keep the gas up to my standards. I know folks who use Marvel Mystery Oil additive and SeaFoam additive to keep the gas up to snuff and the injection systems and the carb systems protected. In this day and time it's an extra expense but probably worth it considering what we are running through our scooters! Bad gas means we have to fix it via spending extra money to protect our babies!

The manual says "any additives to the fuel or lubricant is not allowed". I was about to use add some fuel injector cleaner as well to my gas but now I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

Seafoam--run a search, many add it to fuel every now and then with no issues.
