Incoming MOB'ster
Hey fellow tropic brothers, ill be on the island (Oahu) for vacation next week from the 3rd-11th. No really plans to do anything, ive been here once a year for the past few years so ive "been there done that" with all the touristy stuff. Only thing i'm looking to do is surf, maybe dive or go fishing, hiking. I'm more into doing out of the way stuff that you would only know about if you lived there.
We'll be staying in Ko'Olina, and have girlfriends family in Kailua so well be all over the island.
Teddy, elTristo i got some t-shirts for you guys. maybe we can schedule a bar night and i can get them to ya. [thumbsup] Not sure if ill be riding, rentals are sort of expensive and im not bring any gear.

Re: Incoming MOB'ster
Shootz, if you're staying at Ko'olina and Kailua, you'll have the beach stuff covered. Bring or buy some snorkeling gear for the lagoon at Ko'olina. You're sure to see some interesting stuff there. If you're in Kailua, make sure to make your way to Lanikai, consistently voted one of the best beaches on the planet. Snorkeling there would be nice too, but most people just soak up the sun. Folks kayak out to the Moks from Lanikai, but I'm not sure where you rent the kayaks. (Anyone?). Perhaps you can borrow one. Either way, make sure to wear a life vest if you go. The water can change up quickly out there. At the very least, bring your camera for a nice shot of the Moks.
If you're on that side and want a challenge, hike up Olo Mana. You can google it, but I suggest that you DON"T leave your vehicle parked by the trailhead. My brother in law did that once and they broke into his SUV. Have someone drop you off and then pick you up a bit later, may be 2 hours or so. Go on a clear day and you can see all over the island from up there. You'll want to bring a camera, but I suggest a portable for this hike, as it gets pretty tight and narrow towards the top. At one point you have to scramble over some rocks, but there are ropes for you.

I plan to take a swim in the lagoon every most some at least one morning (pending hangover) as part of a vacation exercise routine. Might as well take advantage since were only 20yards off of it.
I kayaked out to the Moks last year with the Gf's brother in-law. Lots of fun. I kayaked, he paddled out on a long board. I wanted to surf so he took me out there to surf the "wrap around" wave. The swells were way too much for me. Turns out some of his friends were partying on the island so we just hung out and drank some beer. Defiantly a good suggestion [thumbsup] may just do it again. Or kayak along the beach.
Olo Mana, cool , that's basically out the front door of GF's sisters house, Thanks for the security tip. I remember the sister telling us that parking lots like that are good spots for thieves. Where is the trail head located at?

Re: Incoming MOB'ster
Cool man. From your post it sounds like you're kama'aina already.
The trail head for Olo Mana is here:
http://www.htmclub.org/trails/olomana.html
It's not on a main road, but a local should be able to find it. There's a security guard shack there which gives you a false sense of security (no pun intended!), but they're there mainly to control access to the golf course.

Re: Incoming MOB'ster
I'm not sure it qualifies as a "scramble", more of a climb on that rock face up near the 1st summit.
there's plenty of tight switchback and scrambling before that point, though... ;D
the shark tours in haleiwa are kinda touristy, but that's something I've been wanting to do...

EDIT
I've got gear for most any activity, but no extra bike. 'cept maybe for the schleptor! [laugh]

Re: Incoming MOB'ster
I suppose taking the cage wouldn't be that big of a deal... it's just no fun...
I suppose taking a boat out to the shark cage isn't quite a 'beach' thing... maybe that's why I'm ok w/it [cheeky] it's more like going to an aquarium... only sorta swimming w/sharks [cheeky]

is that like diving with sharks?
Last year i went shark fishing out of Ala Wai harbor. Only got one on the boat, but the cool thing was it left at 9pm so were were out there in the dark. Very cool to look at the island and Waikiki from the water at night. probably something most don't see.
