Default Mystery of the clutch...

So I see Ducs on the road with sweet clutch covers and plates...and I think, that would be great to get mine to look and sound like that. Thus the mystery...what is it going to look like when I pull off the factory cover? Does the factory clutch plate have any color, is it decent enough to keep it as is...or should I be pricing out plates and covers? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chuck

Answers that...Is there a brand of plate that you would reccomend...I know what type of covers are decent, but not the plate.

Yep the stocker is cast and rather plain looking. Some folks paint or powder coat their stockers for some low dollar sprucing up. Some other things you might want to write into the budget are stainless steel springs and some nicer spring retainer 'buttons'

For plates - there's a lot to choose from.

SpeedyMoto
Rizoma
MPL
to name a few.

I chose SpeedyMoto. Partly on looks, but they also came with a bearing installed (not all do) and their plates are taller, covering/protecting more of the springs from possible harm.

If you take the stock plate and shoot it with whatever color paint, it looks 11tyb times better. As a threadjack, does anyone know what kind of paint works well? Would caliper paint work well enough? What did people do for prepwork? Maybe this is a better topic to go searching and/or posting in the mods section.

Yea to every thing stated above.

You can just pull the cover off to see what it looks like. All the cover is doing is protecting the clutch plate incase of a fall. So if you get a new cover you may want one that actually protects. I have a 1/2 carbon fiber one on now and my clutch would be in serious bad shape in case of a fall on the right side. (knock on wood)

Personally I dont think there is any advantage to any of the plates. It basically comes down to what look you like the best. As far as I have read there is no performace aspect of the clutch plate. (please correct me if I am wrong here). I do think speedymoto makes the best looking stuff but they do charge a bunch.

One thing I have done so far was to get red springs from speedy. The stainless is much nicer and cut back on the squeakyness created by rust on the factory springs.

As far as painting... I looked into doing that a while back. As far as I read the best way to do it was to pull it off, clean it and powder coat. I would guess even some high temp spray paint may do the trick for some time. I have a feeling it would flake off after a while though.

I have had a set up picked out from speedymoto for a while... just cant justify spending 500 bucks for just good looks. But it would look soooo money! ;D

If you want to get super technical, getting a lighter weight plate will have *some* effect on the performance. Dumping rotating mass means quicker spin up and less power wasted getting things going.

That being said.. in a pressure plate alone there probably isn't enough change in mass from one to another for a human to really feel the effects on the performance.
