Damn..

- Already got the clearance.
- Double the experience required.
- Familiar with all the systems.
- Would like the pay increase. Out of curiosity, what sort of pay does a job like this get in the real world?

But, you gotta wait a few years for my current employer to let me go.

Wagering a guess, probably 55 - 65 depending on experience. Could be more but certainly not less. The pay is so varied in these positions due to the contracts they support.

Good grief. When I went to Herndon High School, practically the only jobs in the area were fast food, Memco, or farming. I guess it's changed a little, huh?

The trick is either having a clearance or getting a foot in the door. Lot's of companies will hire a very new person to fly the Help Desk but only those with a good development program should be considered. Meaning if you're there two months and have never sat in an impromptu class, run.

Pay for these positions is usually very low, but it's a start. You're looking at around 30k for the customer service type jobs and 40k for non-cleared, completely basic positions.

Once you're in, knocking out certifications specific to your equipment will always bring a bigger, better return. If you're working for a service provider (hosting, ISP, etc) your certifications count towards their technical partnerships with companies like Microsoft and Cisco. They know it and will encourage you to pursue professional development.

If you're looking to get into it, the State Dept is getting ready to ask for bids on a large Help Desk project. They are going to need lots of ticket punchers soon and most companies will not be able to fill the ranks quickly. It will require a secret (which really only requires a pulse and you not being a murderer) but most of the bidders will probably be sponsoring folks without one.

Let me know if you're interested! I'll forward info as soon as the bid is complete.

Scott,

If you leave the Navy with a TS, you're golden no matter what bro. Something will be waiting for you upon ETS.

Yeah.. but all I want is to pour beers at a tiki bar on some tropical island when I walk away from this. Don't need a TS for that.

It is enticing to get into a reg govvy job vice this though.
