Painting headlight surround

Picking up my 2008 S2R1k on saturday, one of my first mods is going to be painting the chrome headlight surround black.

Just wondering if you've got any tips/tricks or recommended products. Should I scuff up the "chrome" with some light duty sandpaper?

Are you skilled at painting? Have proper tools/equipment or are you rattle canning it?

I would go to the local powdercoater and pay them $20 to get it done...
