high rpms on highway
Most of my driving is on the highway.I want to reduce my rpms a little because at 70mph my rpms are at around 5 or 6 and I feel that's pretty high to be running for long periods of time.
I'm riding an 01 monster 600.
As far as I know my sprockets are stock. Can anyone suggest what sprocket I need. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I wanted a a 750 but I couldn't pass up this deal lol

stock gearing should produce 4,800 at 75 mph.
play with gearing chart to get what you want

I ride a 600 bit 5 yrs older than you. Freeway commute every day is 100km p/hr (we talk km in oz instead of miles). Rpm on 5th gear is right on what tripod says a little below 5. Think to convert miles to km about 1.6 so that 120kmp/hr. Will try remember tomo to go 120 and see what rpm I get to report to u. Guessing not much dif maybe. I also believe I am on stock sprockets though contemplating lowering gearing in a couple weeks. From reading other threads here mid 5's should be fine. Anyone Would that be fine? Even for a ling time? sometimes I barely notice I'm in 4th just over 5 as pretty damn smooth n happy she feels?

I regularly run higher than that for extended time when I am slapping it.
If i'm not running 80mph on tollway, I am getting run over!
I changed to a -1/+1 set up, and my stock gearing at 5,250 rpm produced 89mph, revised gearing at 5,250 is 81mph, stock gearing would have been about 4,800rpm at 80mph, so difference at 80 mps is 450 rpm.

Running at the high rpms won't really hurt anything, although eventually it will cause more wear. You may have to replace your piston rings at 100K miles instead of 120K. Gas mileage is affected a bit as well.
Given your account, and the age of your bike, I'd bet you are not on stock sprocket sizes; gearing Monsters for smoother low end and more acceleration is a *very* common mod. You could simply count the teeth on your sprockets to see what they are, and compare to the stock spec. Without knowing what you actually have, I couldn't recommend what you need, but if you have a 14 on the front, that's a modification and you can go back to a 15. Or you can reduce whatever you have on the rear by a couple of teeth.
Similar to you, I do a lot of highway riding, and some long distance touring on mine. My stock sprockets were 15/39, and I actually regeared in the opposite direction as everyone else, for lower rpms and better gas mileage on the highway. I've been running a 15/37 combination.

Thanks a lot everyone. This will give me an idea where to start. I'll have to go count my teeth.
I was just a little worried about running 5`s for a long period of time, but by the way everyone is talking I'll be fine.

I have a 620 and it's only really happy above 4000 rpm. I regularly ride it at or above 5000 rpm with no problems. Heck, it redlines around 10k, so 5k is right in the middle. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just don't run the engine at, say, 7-8k for extended times--unless the roads are twisty

U lucky bastards with 70 mph highway. All freeways here are 62 miles or 100km in our language. Not one rd in state is higher

70? Where? Round here it's now set at 80mph and the cops won't touch you unless you are going 10+ over or do something stupid like not signaling a lane change or passing on the right. Ah but those are arrow straight 4 lane highways and not challenging back roads, no we keep those posted at 65-70mph.
