after all this cutting the bars talk i decided what the hell...
went to home depot bought a $29 pipe cutter and 10 minutes later... no gap
the copper pipe cutters cut through the bars like butter.
Great solution!! Y'know I already own such a pipe cutting tool, but the thought never occurred to me..... Instead I went the "file-the-pin-off" route, which worked out just fine for me.

When I did the handle bar flip mod I also shaved off the nubs (technical term ) and used a pipe cutter to cut off about the same amount off the end of the handle bars as mrplease. Been happy with the results ever since (well over a year ago).

Yeah, it's a cheap (actually free) alternative to clip-ons.
I was going to say click the "My bike so far..." link in my signature, but since this forum changed their format I haven't been able to edit my posts on any of the old threads.
i just did the rizoma bars and billet grips last night, great look and feel but the throttle rattles on the bar a bit and is not as smooth as the original throttle sleeve due to spacing and lack of guide, small bit of binding at wide open throttle is frustrating and probably a scary kind of cruise controll. im leaving them on and will tweak a bit.....
