Default Re: Good "how I told my parents" stories?

I wanted a bike my entire life, but my parents were convinced that one would kill me before I even got on it. Eventually I realized that as a responsible parent in his late 40's who had survived medical school and was entrusted with the health of others I got to make my own decisions and somewhat impulsively bought a Vespa.

After I got my Vespa, I realized that since we all live in a tiny town in NH they'd practically know about it before I did. Therefore, I rode it over to their house and walked in carrying my helmet and wearing my gear. My mom said "you got a bike?!" and went out to see it. She called my dad ("Bob - you've got to see this") out to see it. Somewhat to my amazement, they were ooh-ing and aah-ing and saying how cool it looked. Dad wanted to know the displacement, top speed, etc. It turns out they'd gotten around college on a "little red Cushman!" The hypocritical bastards! (That was actually my dad's phrase, but I find it apt.)

Fast-forward less than 2 months. By then, I'd bought the Monster. Again, they were interested and hid whatever worry they might have had. Then, I crashed it. There was no way I could hide this. There's the small town thing, but the crutches and thumb brace would have been something of a giveaway as well. When I called up and told them, the first question was about my injuries. Once I'd reassured them they were minor, the next question was "how's the Ducati? Can it be fixed?" Now, every time my Dad sees a Duc for sale he calls up to tell me about it even though I've insisted I have all the bikes I want.

Sometimes parents amaze you, even after nearly half a century.
