This is a 1994 M900. The front and rear
end came off a 996. Engine is standard but overhauled. I did not go
for a radical paint-job because I wanted a monster that looked OEM
- like it came from the factory. Mostly, I used existing OEM parts
or modified them to fit.
|
Front end:
- A new steering stem (machined) and new bearings were installed to
accommodate the 996 front end.
- Top triple was bored, sleeves welded to fit the risers. The risers
were needed to clear the tall forks adjusters. Aesthetics aside, they
are very comfortable – similar to the Aprilia Tuono. Required
longer, custom-made throttle, brake & clutch cables.
- Carbon-fiber fairing sourced from eBay and painted (hate the look
of faded carbon-fiber). Fairing supported by a fabricated steel mini-trellis
frame (no more flapping fairing).
- New signals & mirrors were also fitted. 996 fender also painted.
- Headlight holder had to be modified to fit on the 996 triples. Holder,
headlight rim & shell powdercoated Black.
- Twin HELLA horns (essential for survival) were fitted underneath
the headlight.

 |
Rear end:
- Engine cases had to be shimmed down to fit the 996 single-sided
swingarm.
- New mounting point was welded to the frame to fit the 996 shock
and ride adjuster.
- Brackets were made to relocate the 996 rear brake assembly and the
reservoir. Fitted with longer custom-made cable.

Exhaust system: this is the tricky part
- 748 exhaust system sourced from eBay.
- The front end of the original M900 front header was cut off and
welded to the 748 joint.
- I used some PVC pipes and the union joints from the 748 as a mock-up.
The old monster header was cut and welded to the correct angle. This
piece was then joined to the crossover pipe.
- Made 2 aluminum brackets to bolt the crossover pipes onto the chassis
(the upper bracket is hidden behind the footpeg bracket, the lower
bolts on to the engine casing).
- A lower extension to the heat shield was made to adequately cover
the crossover pipes.
- Mufflers were powdercoated black.

 |
Frame:
- Did a reverse tail-chop. Welded a donated tail-piece (from a fellow
forum member) on to the chopped end. Heated and bend the tail-piece
upwards in line with the rear frame to accommodate the 748 exhaust
pipes.
- Welded new mounting points to hold the exhaust hangers.
- Frame was stripped down to bare metal and powdercoated Red.
|
|
Engine:
- Engine was stripped down and powdercoated Black. The fins and DUCATI
logo were then sand down. Overhauled and reassembled.
- Oil cooler also powdercoated Black.
|
 |
 |
Paintwork:
- Customised decals designed on my computer and printed at a printshop.
- Spraypainted tank, fairing, side covers, tail, and custom decals
added.
|
Misc:
- Ignition switch relocated to the front of the triple and meter raised
an inch.
- Using plastic epoxy, turn signals were integrated into the tail
piece for a more streamlined, narrower look.
- Helmet lock mounted between the bar clamps for easier access.
- The monster sidestand was too short, so a Cagiva Mito sidestand
was used instead. Had to be shorten for a less upright position to
prevent an accidental tip-over.
- New aluminum seat undertray was fabricated and laid with heat-resistant
fabric.
- Licence plate holder sourced from eBay, modified and fitted.
- Seat lock eliminated and a latch was fabricated.
Cheers,
