This month's featured bike - Sean's Monster!
[Editor's note: I saw this bike at the San Mateo motorcycle show and knew I had to have it as a featured bike. Now some people might cry 'foul' because Sean has an unfair advantage working at MotoWheels, but I think it is still an awesome bike.]

The bike started out as 1999 Monster Chromo; I had a bit of an accident in early May. I hit a huge pot hole at night doing about 65mph and the bike pitched me off and then went sliding down the road for about 300 or more feet. Miraculously I survived sliding 150 or more feet with just a few minor scratches. I learned the importance of safety equipment, and for that matter, quality safety equipment.

After seeing Martin’s (owner of Motowheels) Monster, I pretty much followed suit as far as modifications goes. His monster pretty much has everything you can do to it. I know, not very original, however Martin is very well likely the best source of Ducati information on a wide scale, from OEM parts and especially performance parts, in the country. He has done the research, talked to everybody you possibly can, and experienced things first hand by trial and error. He knows what works the best, what is essential and what is the best bang for the buck. Since working here for over a year now, I have adopted the same philosophy of knowing the bikes and the parts we sell, what it takes to install them and their respective qualities and benefits

I have talked at length with some of the greatest builders of engines and tuners in the country before I underwent reconstruction. The information that I acquired has subsequently led to the parts that we now stock and are proud to sell. One of our greatest assets besides importing unique performance parts, is stocking them, so that they are available to ship right away, or having great prices and excellent customer service, is the knowledge in knowing how the parts function, their idiosyncrasies and how they work together.

Our mantra here at Motowheels is, “ It’s easier to make a bike lighter, than it is to make it faster.” This bike is a testament to that.

It has shed about 60 pounds during the whole process, and the weight to be close to 330 pounds. Losing the weight has made the bike a completely different bike from stock in every form and fashion. Because a lot of the weight lost was “ unsprung weight” , the bike’s performance has gained ten fold. Accelerates harder, brakes in a shorter distance ( great late braking ) Overall handling feels like riding a bicycle!

For a bike that started with only 74hp, with the only engine modification being Flat side carbs, it will easily keep up with a 996 and then some. I am planning to build the engine next, however the bike is now quite a handful, and does take a bit of work keeping the front end down in the first 4 gears.

All the parts can be found at Motowheels, any of us here can answer any questions regarding the monster or the parts. Please feel free to email us. sean@motowheels.com or sales@motowheels.com
