Model Comparison FAQ - by Michael Moore on 5/17/04

One of the most frequently requested FAQs for prospective Monster buyers is some sort of model comparison FAQ. There are so many dimensions and sources of information that in doing this I'm bound to omit something important, or get a detail wrong, so if I have, please let me know. You may also want to check the used bike price guide.

Monster Models: 1993-2003 (US only)

This is a very simplified version of Tom Marhoefer's excellent webpage listing worldwide Monster production. If you need to see dates of non-US production, or how many police bikes were sent to Saudi Arabia, go check it out. Note that the colored squares represent the date of manufacture, not sale.

General Model Variations

Within a displacement there are usually several models, each having similar characteristics regardless of the motor size.

Basic Model- This is, well, the basic model. Usually comes in red and yellow, but there were other colors like silver, 'Senna' (gray with red wheels), gray and black made during various years.

Dark - These bikes come with a flat black tank and black plastic fenders. There is usually no seat cowl and the pegs are typically all metal instead of metal and rubber. The swingarm is typically steel, and the suspension is sometimes a lower spec version of the regular model.

S or "Special" - These models typically have better suspension than the Basic model, with Showa adjustable forks, and Sachs or sometimes Ohlins shock. Also windscreen, cowl and CF fender, sprocket cover, heel guards.

Metallic - These bikes have a 'sparkle' or glitter type tank. You either love 'em or hate 'em. No data on whether these have the S or Basic trim.

Cromo - Cromo bikes are basically S models with a chrome tank. These tanks are about double the cost of the already expensive Monster tank, so denting one of these babys may require a second mortgage. No data on whether these have the S or Basic trim.

City - The City bikes had taller handlebars (for a more upright riding posture), a windscreen, the Mandarina Duck bags, and lower gearing for city riding. The color on these bikes was usually blue.

Matrix - Special limited edition green bike with tie in to the Matrix Reloaded movie. No info on whether it is an S or Basic.

Fogarty - Only made on the S4, the Fogarty model has all the high end bits and a special paint scheme.

2000 upgrades and data:
• Complete make over for 2000, after 6 years without substantial changes, include: EFI replaced carbs in 2000, HP increased to 78 (from 74), new hollow axle front forks upped to 43mm from 41mm diameter, full tach/speedo replaced the speedo cluster of 1994-1999, lighter wheels, Goldline Brembo upgrade, smoother 748 transmission, beautified rear fender and turn signals, new fuel tank with improved knee cutout area for taller riders. Retracting sidestand gone.

(from bigian) When they changed the tank they also change the shape of the seat, so you can't use the '00 tank on a pre '00 monster without changing the seat too. They also changed the "suicide stand" for a regular stand with an ignition cutout (that apparently doesn't let you warm the bike up idling in neutral in the sidestand) - the sidestand also grew a "ball on a stick" to kick it down (with which grounds out earlier than the old sidestand). Another change was to the handlebars - the inside of the ends changed so the old plastic bar end plugs don't fit the current bars 'cause the holes in the end are smaller.

1993:
• Red or Black color
• Gray belt covers, sprocket cover and air covers; frame same color as 916
• Adjustable Marzocchi forks
