Posting a Photo - Updated by Tyler A on May 15, 2008

People have trouble posting a photo to our PhotoGallery so I thought I'd whip up these short instructions (plus pictures for all you right-brainers out there).

Getting your photo ready

The first thing you'll want to do is get the size of the photo down to something reasonable. With 4, 5 and 6 megapixel digital cameras out there it is easy to just try and upload a huge file, but that may not be the most efficient route. This board's software will automagically size photos down, but why waste your bandwidth and ours by sending a 2000x3000 pixel photo when it will get sized to no more than 480 pixels wide? Before you send a photo, you should do two things:

  • Use an image editing program to size the photo to no more than 500 pixels wide (or high if it is "portrait" mode). [see below for avatar notes]
  • Save the resulting file with a meaningful name (not "img3456.jpg")

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail on photo editing software, just use what you're comfortable with, or whatever came with your camera.

Uploading the photo

Click on the "Gallery Home" link under the PHOTO GALLERY section on the left navigation bar.
Find the section where you'd like to post your pic (e.g. "Bikes of the DML") and click on that
Click the "Upload Photos" button on the right (a little down from the top).
Select the picture you want to upload, by clicking on the folder icon.
Enter a title and description for your photo. Keep the title fairly short and enter any detailed information under the description section.

Keywords are optional by may be helpful in helping others search out your pics.

When you're rading to send in the photo, click the "Upload/Submit" button

A special note on Avatars

What the heck is an 'avatar'? Well, it is the cute little image that identifies you in the discussion board.

Previously, avatars were uploaded through the gallery, but now they can be changed through your User Control Panel (UserCP).

So, go to your UserCP, and find the "Edit Avatar" section on the left navigation bar.

You'll want to click the radio-button (round dot with a circle in it) beside "Use Custom Avatar".

Next, you can select to either "Enter the URL for an image", which will pull it from an external website, or to upload your own photo.
To upload your own photo, click the "Browse" button, then select a photo file from on your computer
Once you've found a good photo to use, click "Save Changes"
** Please note that there are limits to the size that you avatar can be. An overly large avatar would disrupt the forum-loading too much for everyone
